"My message is that we'll be watching you. This is all wrong. I shouldn't be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you!.. You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. Yet I am one of the lucky ones. People are suffering...."
Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg is a 17-year-old girl from Swedia, she is an environmental activist in promoting the view that humanity is facing an existential crisis arising from climate change. In her 15th years, Greta Thunburg became a prominent figure to begin the first school strike for climate outside the Swedish parliament building in the world, millions of young people have joined her on protests, with many children walking out of school to take part. She is a very brave young girl who has started to speak up her voice about the emergency of crisis arising from climate change with her straightforward speaking manner in public. But, beside that Greta has a condition called Asperger's Syndrome. For people living with
the condition, social interaction can be more difficult, but this does not become an obstacle for her to continue to be a climate change fighter.
Greta has achieved various honours and awards over the course of her activism, before the start of her school strike, she was one of the winners of a climate change essay competition by Svenska Dagbladet (The Swedish Daily News) for young people in May 2018, she also was nominated as the recipient of the Telge Energy electricity company prize for children and young people who promoted sustainable development, the Children's Climate Prize, but was rejected because the finalists had to fly to Stockholm. Also, her name was written as 25 most influential teens of 2018 in Time Magazine. Furthermore, Greta Thunberg has received from various NGOs and scientific institutions that lauded her success in raising awareness of climate change.
Greta Thunberg has invited as a speaker on TEDxStockholm, again at the same year she gave her speech on United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2018. After that, she has invited to gave her speech in 2019 UN Climate Action Summit in New York. Not only that, but he has been a speaker at various events. Her speech has made us realize what we have done with our earth and why we are just sitting there without doing anything. "I want you to act as if the house is on fire, because it is." (World Economic Forum, Davos, 24 January 2019), this quote was her closing line of a speech given at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. Every words that she said make anyone who heard it aware and care about the emergency of climate change particularly for young generations.
Not only through her words, but she really does all the little things that can affect better climate change, before she began her protest she forced her parents to adopt several life style to reduce their own carbon footprint and she famously does not travel by plane due to their high carbon emissions. For instance, instead of flying to attend meetings, she prefer to travelled for 32 hours by train to attend World Economic Forum in Switzerland and she sailed across the Atlantic to attend events in New York.
Therefore, Greta Thunburg has taught and warned us the view that humanity is facing an existential crisis arising from climate change, bacause this earth is our home so we are young generations have to maintain and protect our home from small things, because something big comes from something small.
"When haters go after your looks and differences, it means they have nowhere left to go. And then you know you're winning!"
(Greta Thunberg on Instagram, 31 August 2019)
